Got a chip or crack from the 401, the DVP, or a pothole on Eglinton? You’re not alone. This guide covers everything Toronto drivers need to know about windshield repair — what it is, how it works, whether yours can be fixed, what it costs, and how insurance fits in.

1. What is windshield repair?

Windshield repair is a process that restores a chipped or cracked windshield without replacing the entire glass. A certified technician injects a clear optical resin into the damaged area. The resin fills the void, bonds the two layers of glass back together, and — once cured — restores the windshield’s structural integrity and prevents the damage from spreading further.

It’s worth understanding what a windshield actually is. Unlike the side windows in your car, which are made from tempered glass, your windshield is made from laminated glass — two thin layers of glass fused together with a polymer interlayer (PVB) in between. This sandwich construction is what makes windshields shatter-resistant and, crucially, repairable.

When a rock hits your windshield, it damages the outer glass layer — but the inner PVB layer typically stays intact. That intact inner layer is what holds everything together and makes resin injection possible. If the chip or crack hasn’t penetrated through to the inner layer, there’s a strong chance it can be repaired.

2. How does windshield repair work?

The repair process uses vacuum pressure and ultraviolet light to fill and seal the damaged glass. Here’s exactly what happens when a certified technician repairs your windshield:

Step 1 — Damage inspection

The technician examines the chip or crack — size, type, depth, and location — to confirm it’s repairable and which resin formula to use.

⏱ ~5 minutes

Step 2 — Area cleaning

The damaged area is carefully cleaned to remove all moisture, dirt, and debris. Any contamination prevents the resin from bonding properly.

⏱ ~10 minutes

Step 3 — Resin injection

A vacuum-pressure tool is sealed over the chip. It first pulls air out of the void, then injects clear optical resin under pressure, filling every part of the damage.

⏱ ~20 minutes

Step 4 — UV cure & polish

The resin is hardened using ultraviolet light. Once fully cured, the surface is polished smooth — restoring clarity and the windshield’s original structural strength.

⏱ ~15 minutes

The result: the chip is sealed, the damage can no longer spread, and the windshield regains close to its original strength. In most cases, the repair is nearly invisible to the naked eye — though the primary goal is structural restoration, not cosmetic perfection.

⚠️  Don’t wait too long. A chip left untreated collects dirt and moisture, which makes resin bonding less effective. In Toronto winters, the freeze-thaw cycle can turn a repairable chip into an irreparable crack in days. Act quickly to keep your options open.

3. Should you repair or replace your windshield?

Not every chip or crack can be repaired. The decision depends on four factors: size, location, depth, and age of the damage. Here’s the honest breakdown:

The Toonie Rule — Canada’s Quick Guide
If the chip or crack is smaller than a Canadian toonie (about 25mm / 1 inch), it can almost always be repaired. Bigger than a toonie, or longer than 3 inches as a crack? You likely need a replacement. When in doubt, get a free assessment from our team.

Condition Repair ✓ Replace ✗
Size of damage Smaller than a toonie / crack under 3″ Larger than a toonie / crack over 3″
Location Outside driver’s direct line of sight Directly in driver’s line of sight
Edge proximity 2+ inches from windshield edge Within 2 inches of the edge
Glass layers Outer layer only affected Both glass layers penetrated
Number of chips 1–3 separate chips 4+ chips or spreading cracks
Insurance coverage Usually $0 deductible Deductible may apply

Our technicians always follow a repair-first policy — we only recommend replacement when repair genuinely cannot restore the structural integrity of your windshield. Repair is faster, cheaper, and better for the environment.

4. Why Toronto roads are tough on windshields

Toronto drivers get more windshield chips than almost anywhere else in Canada — and it’s not bad luck. There are four specific reasons:

  • Heavy truck traffic on major routes. Highway 401, the Don Valley Parkway, the Gardiner Expressway, and Highway 400 see constant commercial vehicle traffic. Trucks kick up road debris, gravel, and construction aggregate at high speed.
  • Year-round construction zones. Toronto is one of the most active construction cities in North America. Flying debris from active construction sites along the Eglinton Crosstown, waterfront redevelopment, and downtown condo developments is a consistent source of windshield chips.
  • Extreme temperature swings. Toronto winters drop to -20°C; summers hit 35°C+. An untreated chip absorbs water in winter, which freezes and expands the crack overnight. What was repairable on Monday can require full replacement by Friday.
  • Pothole damage. The freeze-thaw cycle destroys Toronto road surfaces every winter. Potholes create roadway debris and cause vibrations that stress existing chips and accelerate spreading.

If you drive regularly on the 401, DVP, or through areas like Scarborough, North York, or Brampton, you’re at higher risk than the average Canadian driver. Regular windshield checks are worth adding to your vehicle routine.

6. Is windshield repair covered by insurance in Ontario?

Yes — and it’s one of the most underused benefits in Ontario auto insurance. Here’s how it works:

Under most comprehensive auto insurance policies in Ontario, windshield chip repair is covered with no deductible. That means the repair costs you nothing. Insurance companies actually prefer that you repair chips quickly — a $100 chip repair today prevents a $500 replacement claim next month.

Full windshield replacement is also covered under comprehensive insurance, though your deductible typically applies. Depending on your deductible amount and the cost of replacement, it may or may not make sense to make a claim — we’ll advise you honestly before we start any work.

Under Ontario Regulation 777/93, you also have the legal right to choose your own repair facility — your insurer cannot force you to use a specific shop. You are free to choose Wind Auto Glass for your repair or replacement regardless of what your insurer suggests.

We work directly with all major Ontario insurance providers including Intact, Aviva, TD Insurance, Desjardins, Economical, and CAA. We handle the entire claims process — you don’t fill out any paperwork.

7. Mobile windshield repair in Toronto

You don’t need to drive to a shop to get your windshield repaired. Wind Auto Glass offers fully mobile windshield repair and replacement across Toronto and the entire GTA — our certified technicians come to your home, workplace, or any convenient location at no extra charge.

Mobile service is especially valuable in Toronto, where driving with a damaged windshield on the 401 or DVP carries real risk — and where nobody wants to spend an hour commuting to a glass shop on top of an already busy day.

8. What about ADAS recalibration?

If your vehicle was manufactured after approximately 2016, there’s a good chance it’s equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — technology that includes lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and automatic wipers.

These systems rely on cameras and sensors that are mounted on or directly behind the windshield. When you replace your windshield, the camera’s position shifts by even a fraction of a millimetre — which is enough to throw off the entire system’s calibration.

If your ADAS is not recalibrated after replacement, your safety systems may not function correctly. Lane departure warnings may not trigger at the right time. Emergency braking may not activate when it should.

Wind Auto Glass performs both static and dynamic ADAS calibration using manufacturer-approved software on all makes and models. Recalibration is typically covered by insurance when done in connection with a covered windshield replacement.

Note: ADAS recalibration is only required after full windshield replacement — not after chip or crack repair, since the original glass remains in place.

9. Frequently asked questions

What is windshield repair?

Windshield repair is the process of fixing chips and small cracks in a vehicle’s windshield without replacing the entire glass. A certified technician injects clear optical resin into the damaged area under vacuum pressure. The resin bonds the two glass layers together, restores structural strength, and prevents the damage from spreading. Most repairs take 30 to 60 minutes and can be done at your location.

How does windshield repair work?

Windshield repair works in four steps: (1) the technician inspects the damage to confirm it’s repairable; (2) the area is thoroughly cleaned to remove moisture and debris; (3) optical resin is injected into the chip or crack using a vacuum-pressure tool; and (4) the resin is cured with ultraviolet light, hardening it and bonding it permanently with the glass. The total process takes under 60 minutes.

Can a cracked windshield be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. A crack can be repaired if it is shorter than 3 inches (7.5 cm), not in the driver’s direct line of sight, and does not start or end at the windshield edge. Chips smaller than a toonie are almost always repairable. Larger cracks, edge cracks, or damage that penetrates both glass layers usually require full replacement.

How long does windshield chip repair take?

Most chip repairs take between 30 and 60 minutes from start to finish. The process — inspection, cleaning, resin injection, and UV cure — is all performed on-site at your location. With our mobile service across Toronto and the GTA, there’s no shop visit required and no disruption to your day.

Is windshield chip repair free with insurance in Ontario?

In most cases, yes. Comprehensive auto insurance in Ontario typically covers windshield chip repair with no deductible — meaning you pay $0 out of pocket. Wind Auto Glass works directly with all major Ontario insurers and handles the claim on your behalf. Call us and we’ll verify your coverage before we begin any work.

Can I drive immediately after a windshield repair?

Yes — after a chip repair, you can drive immediately. The UV-cured resin is fully hardened by the time the technician is done. After a full windshield replacement, however, you should wait at least one hour for the adhesive to cure before driving. We’ll give you a specific safe drive-away time based on conditions on the day.
